Sand corn (Zigadenus paniculatus) is a flowering plant of the lily family (Liliaceae) found in dry areas throughout Tahoe and in the Great Basin at low and mid elevation. The pictures show the long, grasslike leaves grown up from the base of the stem. The bending—even nodding—panicles showily display the many cream-colored flowers with their yellow anthers. Zigadenus species are also called death camas: they are poisonous. The steroidal alkaloid zygacine is believed to be their primary toxic component (doi: 10.2527/jas.2010-3444). For Zigadenus paniculatus, other common and scientific names are in use.
