The following dictionary lists
scientific names of plant
families that belong to the division of flowering plants.
These terms are followed by corresponding
English and
German
names. In certain cases a literal translation is provided
to illustrate cases of equal or similar descriptive
meanings across languages; for example
waterleaf family
and Wasserblattgewächse
for Hydrophyllacea. Some family
entries include a note indicating the change of family
status, which may have been shifted to
subfamily
status or another ranking in the classification hierarchy.
German family names typically end in
-gewächse or
-blütler.
The former ending is the plural form of the noun
Gewächs, meaning
plant or, literally,
something grown.
The ending -blütler is related
to the word Blüte, meaning
flower head.
The dictionary contains entries for frequently and less
frequently encountered plant families. Selected names and
added annotations are based on various resources given in the
Reference section.
