Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is located about half way between Auburn and Placerville on California's historic Highway 49. Here, in the streambed of the South Fork of the American River, James Marshall found some gold flakes in January 1848. Various markers, tools and buildings on this site illustrate the times of the gold rush. The park contains the James Marshall Monument, a Gold Discovery Museum and various trails and picnic areas.
