„De Vrouw Johanna” windmill (Frau Johanna Mühle)

Frau Johanna Muehle in Emden

A historic windmill of the Dutch gallery type towering on Emden's city wall

Emden's Frau Johanna Mühle is a windmill standing on a spot of the former city wall, which is now a green belt that surrounds the north quarters of Emden's downtown in a semi-circle. According to an informative panel, the mill was built in 1804 and is now protected as a historic monument. Since its renovation, the mill again is occassionaly put into action (see video). The windmill architecture is of the Dutch gallery type (Galerieholländer) with an octagonal, brick-built, three-floor base—almost 13 meter (43 feet) high. The total height of the mill is 25 meter (82 feet).

Address of the windmill: Am Marienwehrster Zwinger 11, 26721 Emden, Germany. Contact the Emder Mühlenverein e. V. to arrange a windmill tour. Phone number: (04921) 34123.
