Balanced boulder lodged in position—but for how long?
Rocks describes as “balanced” or “balancing” are found at different places and not always arrive at their prominent position by movement, such as the Lynn Woods erratics did by glacier-ice transportation. A balancing rock formation may also form by erosion. The Balancing Rock in Lake Tahoe's D.L. Bliss State Park is an impressive example.
Whether lodged or sculpted, a balanced rock position will come off balance at some point. Remember, that the nearby Dungeon Rock formation was impacted by earthquake action resulting in the collapse of the cave underneath. This powerful New England earthquake of 1638 certainly unbalanced and transformed other rock structures around.
