A scenery of blue, gray and green: water, boulders, conifers.
Twin Lakes
are a pair of shallow ponds within a boulder-rich setting in the
Carson Range.
As the lakes shrink into ponds over the summer season,
boulders—one after another—pop out of the lakes, which may
even dry up completely.
In spring and early summer, the lakes or ponds make for an
idyllic rest stop, while hiking, running or biking the
Tahoe Rim Trail
(TRT)
between Tahoe Meadows and Spooner Summit.
The
Sand Harbor Lookout
can be reached from here, by following the switchbacks of the
TRT
uphill onto Herlan Peak.
After climbing for 2.2 miles, turn right on
the Sand Harbor Overlook trail with its
scenic loop, allowing for a
grand view of Lake Tahoe—which
doesn't dry out as fast as the Twin Lakes.
