North Peak (3,557 ft., 1,084 m) is
located northeast of Mount Diablo Summit
(3,849 ft., 1,173 m) in the Diablo Range,
a mountain range within the
California Coast Ranges.
These rugged peaks south of the Carquinez Strait are distinct landmarks of
Contra Costa Country.
A three-mile-long hiking and mountain biking trail connects the two peaks,
leading down
to Prospector's Gap and up to the opposite
peak. The mixed woodland of oaks and pines includes substantial thickets
that gave Mount Diablo its name by a
Spanish-to-English mistranslation.
Like the Mount Diablo Summit area, North Peak has various transmission
towers. A geological map displayed in the Mount Diablo Summit Museum
shows that both peaks lie within the
Franciscan Complex,
a late Mesozoic terrane of heterogeneous rocks found throughout the
Coast Ranges.
