Blynman Bridge: a drawbridge over the Annisquam River canal

Blynman Bridge

Anne Rowe passing through into Gloucester Harbor bay

If you have ever strolled along the waterfront from Gloucester Downtown to Stage Fort Park and Half Moon Beach, there is a good chance you had to stop at Blynman Bridge because both bridge halves had been lifted up. The bridge is named after Richard Blynman, who supervised the cutting of the first canal at the harbor end of what is called the Annisquam River, but actually is a tidal, salt-water estuary which is connecting Annisquam Harbor to Gloucester Harbor. You will find the following information written on the harbor wall next to the drawbridge
Blynman Bridge, 1907. In Honor Of Richard Blynman, First Minister and leading citizen of Gloucester who 1643 dug this canal uniting River and Bay.
