White Pelicans

White pelicans drifting on Pyramid Lake near Blockhouse Beach

The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is a fish-eating waterbird. White pelicans are also named pouched fishermen for their enormous yellow-orange pouched bill. After leaving their winter habitats in southern California and Mexico, they typically arrive at Pyramid Lake in March to nest on predator-free Anaho Island just west of the eponymous Pyramid. Visiting the lake on April 23, 2017, we saw assemblies of white pelicans at the lake's south end and individuals or pairs swimming close to the lakeshore. Once in a while, we got the chance to see the white birds flying overhead such that their black wing tips clearly became visible. White pelicans are majestic in the air and adorable on the water surface—always in a state of meditative control.
