Once the municipal police headquarters, now “Forum am Wall”

Forum am Wall

Seen from the Kunsthalle site: towering Neo-Renaissance architecture

Bremen's courthouse complex extends from the Domsheide plaza with the courthouse of the State of Bremen (“Landgericht Bremen”) to the “Forum am Wall” building. The latter is named for its location at the street named “Am Wall,” referring to the former city fortification. The striking building housed once the police headquarters and still has a small police station. The section “Forum am Wall (ehem. Polizeihaus)” of the Enjoy Bremen site gives a summary of the building's history:
Built in 1906-08 by the Berlin architect Carl Börnstein. The historicizing design of the facade and excessively large building are typical of the desire at that time for representative public buildings. Two towers on the entrance side to the Wall marked the eastern entry to the Bremen old city. In 2002-04 the building was given a new use and the complex was completely restructured by the Bremen architect Thomas Klumpp.
The “new use” as a forum includes being home of the central city library (Stadtbibliothek Bremen - Zentralbibliothek) and providing space for exhibitions, events and small food & refreshment businesses.
