Moorlose Kirche—a historic church in a swampy nature preserve

Moorlose Kirche

A hidden treasure built in the 1840s in Gothic-revival style

The Moorlose Kirche is a red brick building designed in gothic-revival style by architect Anton Theodor Eggers. Erected between 1845 and 1847, it replaced a crumbling medieval precursor building. The Moorlose church history probably goes back to the 13th century. Since 1973, the neo-Gothic structure is recognized and preserved as a cultural heritage by having Denkmalschutz status. The remote setting of the church in Mittelsbüren at the Weser River attracts bicyclists and inline skaters, who enjoy traveling miles of mostly paved levees alongside the rivers Lesum and Weser. Today, the church is situated in a nature preserve—just north of Bremen's industrial harbor area. A worship service is taking place once a month.
