The picture shows the northwest-facing side of the
Bückeburg Palace
(Schloss Bückeburg).
The Renaissance palace with its historic
halls and architectural gems is a
Wasserschloss—a
castle surrounded by water.
There is only one bridge connecting the island, on which the castle stands,
with its environment.
The artificial island came to be by digging a ditch around
the castle. The front side
of the palace is “hidden” in the courtyard. Outside the
water ring are the public palace garden, the Princely Riding School
(Reithalle) and the nearby downtown district of Bückeburg.
Like the town church, the
palace is built of Obernkirchen sandstone
(Obernkirchener Sandstein)
from the Cretaceous Age—a densely compacted quartz sand with a
fine-grained texture.
